Hi, my friend.
Labour Day has always felt like New Yearās. There's that back-to-school, back-to-routine fresh energy in the air. Do you feel this too? Or, do you crave summer all year long?
For many years Summer plans revolved around kidsā school and camp schedules. Typically by early Spring, every week in July and August would be accounted for. Camps, holiday time, visits with friends. I knew exactly what was happening and when.
This year was different.
Plans were looser and more last minute. It felt like a dance between doing things I wanted and navigating the schedules of my adult-ish children. For someone like me who is a work in progress on the "need to know all the details" front, I found this challenging.
I was constantly asking: When will you be home? When can we do something as a family? Who will be with us at the cottage? Who is home for dinner tonight? When are you working this week? Who ate the chicken in the fridge? Why are all these shoes just tossed at the door?
The change from knowing to not knowing as my kids have gotten older has felt rapid and intense. I wasn't prepared for just how head-spinning it would feel.
While I've been so proud to watch my boys grow into amazing humans I miss the days where I was the centre of their worlds.
It's been a summer of letting go of control and being grateful for the pockets of time as they came. I realized I could be frustrated and mad or I could take a breath and remember how short this time is. I realized that the relationships are more important than my need to know all the details all the time.
And funny thing, for a summer that wasn't meticulously planned it turned out to be pretty amazing. I travelled. Hiked. Spent time by lakes. Relished in the quiet of unplanned days. Giggles with friends. Played lots of tennis. Said yes more.
I learned that when I let go of the need to control the outcome life has a way of unfolding in the most beautiful way.
Tell me, how was your summer? Are you ready for the energy of Fall?
With gratitude, always ā¦
Sarah

Hey Sarah, unsurprisingly I am also practicing flexing the āmindfully being present in the momentā and āgratitudeā muscles (big) this month.
Now my original life goals have (mostly) been given a checkmark beside them, itās time for new ones to emerge (or discarded ones to re-emerge) for this next phase. Simultaneously excited in keeping open to possibility and also grieving the change in motherhood now that childhoods are completed.
Noticing there are many of us riding tandem through this transition. Once again, thank you for sharing the connections we all have. š
